I must admit, I was a little dubious when I contemplated entering Tracy's contest about weird items. I actually hate shopping. Probably mostly because I seem never to be able to find what I want in a store. Today, though, I braved our local Shoppers Food Warehouse to buy pet food before my brood turned on me at home.
Walking down the pet food aisle, I noticed bottled water high atop one of the shelves. Curious, I thought, to find bottled water here amongst the snausages and flea shampoo, so I took a closer look:
FORTIFIDO
FORTIFIED WATER
FOR DOGS
AT ALL STAGES OF LIFE
NATURAL PARSLEY FLAVOR
FOR THE DOG YOU LOVE!
The price was right- $1 for a liter. (Actually, since I was at Shoppers, the price tag read 10 for $10!) so naturally not only was I going to take a picture for the IHMMB contest, but I had to buy it and bring it home for the brood to try.
Shameless self promotion here, I also thought Tracy would totally appreciate the canine theme of my entry- as she is now the proud owner of Princess Leia.
We have two dogs (Spuds- a border collie, and Lily- a beagle) and three cats (Bear-bear, Roscoe, and Grace). Surely one of the brood would not only gain super powers from this Parsley flavored water, but they would all appreciate the gesture, right?
They were curious when I poured the water into their water dish.
Probably because I called them all by name and made a big deal about it. They were thinking "Oh, god, what is that crazy woman doing now?" And then the dish sat there......
One of the cats (Grace) actually sniffed it at one point....

Then I thought it would be funny if I put the two identical water dishes side by side to do a sort of Pepsi challenge of tap water vs. FORTIFIDO
Now no-one is even going near the water dishes.
Finally, I read the ingredient label: water, phosphoric acid, sodium hexametaphosphate, natural parsley flavor, potassium sorbate, zinc gluconate, sodium benzoate, potassium citrate, maltodextrins, niacinamide, D-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12 supplement. Nothing terrible in there! Maybe some things I can't pronounce, but it might even be good for you.
I'm a sucker for "might be good for you" and there was nothing in the ingredients list that violated my sensitive vegetarian food ethics, so I decided I'd give it a try...
You know how the inside of your Jack-O-Lantern smells? Not after it's had a candle in side it, and definetly not after it's sat on your porch until Thanksgiving, but after you've carved it and set it outside the day before Halloween? That's how FORTIFIDO tastes.
Maybe my pets are trying to tell me they don't like Halloween....

That's so funny! Who came up with the idea of making it parsley flavored?
One day I was getting my first delivery from Schwans (they sell frozen food and deliver straight to your door). I wasn't paying too much attention when I ordered online, so I got lots of frozen veggies, an emergency pop in freezer meal and what I thought were little ice cream cups.
So, I didn't know if I should tip the delivery person or not so before he was due to arrive I asked on the forums and somebody asked what I ordered and I told them and ended with "And some of those ice cream cups with the doggie picture on them for the kids"
And somebody said "Uh, that's not real ice cream, it's flavored like beef and is for dogs".
I have never, ever been able to live that one down.
HA! Kudos to you for actually trying the product. I love that you tried to do a side-by-side taste comparison, and your pets backed away slowly from the crazy lady with the water bowls.
Parsley flavor??? Seriously?
So, you never said if you liked it or not. Did you or did you not feel fortified after drinking it? Would you give it out to trick-or-treaters?
And I LOVE Tracy's story about the dog ice cream and I can't believe she hasn't posted about it, unless I missed it. She totally needs to blog about that.
And I too, love that you Pepsi challengified the whole thing.
Tracy, we've bought the doggie ice cream for our pups before, and Rob, one day, decided to try it to see why our dogs liked ice cream so much. He said it tasted like frozen spam.... Ick.
NGIP- I loved the image of giving the fortifido to trickortreaters!
